What

Naranji نارنجی [Nah-ruhn-jee]

Urdu/Farsi

(Noun) A round yellow to orange fruit of any of several citrus trees.

(Noun) A spice business dedicated to sustainability in every sense of the word and deliciousness in all its forms. We seek to capture this essence of flavors that represent vibrant cultures including the Caribbean and South Asia- and beyond!

Who

I’m Zoufishan, part of a multi-generational immigrant family, accustomed to blending customs and flavors to produce something unique and beautiful. Stepping into my family kitchen provides a burst of sensory experiences with afternoon gupshup (chitchat), pungent aromas floating in the air, and vibrant spicy lentils dancing atop an open fire stovetop. These were typical afternoons that would culminate at an evening dastarkhān (tablecloth) to savor meals with loved ones after a long day apart and be present in the moment. Opening up a Naranji spice jar brings back the flood of memories while making me hopeful for future memories that we create.

I’m Noelle, one half of Naranji! I was raised in Tennessee in a Black American and Jamaican household. Growing up, cuisines from the Caribbean and the south melded together seamlessly. A breakfast of ackee and saltfish accompanied by a stack of pancakes seemed as natural to us as bacon and eggs seemed to many others. In the kitchen, we learned as much about our own dynamic sense of “Americanness”, rooted in the bright flavors of both cultures, as we did about our academic subjects which we studied alongside our meals. Naranji's array of spices mirrors the dynamic, vivid experience of sitting at the family kitchen table. The experiential center of family, community and culture is often found in spice.

Why

Naranji evokes bold and lively images in nature from vivid sunsets to poppy fields. Spice is the common thread that transforms simple moments into pure joy, adding color to both memories made and memories to be made. We seek to capture the essence of those beautiful intimate moments in the glass jars of our spice collection that you can make your very own.

We believe your spice experience is unique to your cultural background, upbringing, and travel among many other factors. Between our cultures and our wanderlust, our taste buds have been whetted and we cannot live without flavor. We wanted to create an opportunity for everyone to enjoy high quality spices so everyone can have a piece of home or a taste of a new culinary imagining.

As a WOC owned small business, we pride ourselves in taking care of the community and the DNA of our values can be seen in every aspect of our business. That means not only thoughtfully putting together the product with the highest quality ingredients that are organic, sustainable, fair trade and ethical, but also creating an experience from the first look to the final taste.
